Untangling the Physics of Fishing Gear

Congratulations to former MIT-WHOI graduate student and postdoctoral investigator Julie van der Hoop for winning the Forrest G. Wood Award for best student paper in Marine Mammal Science. The award, which is presented by The Society for Marine Mammalogy, will be presented to Van der Hoop for her coauthored paper on the “Drag from fishing gear entangling North Atlantic right whales”. She will present this research at the 22nd Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Halifax, Nova Scotia later this year.

While in the Joint Program, van der Hoop ‘16 researched and defended her thesis on the “Effects of added drag on cetaceans – fishing gear entanglement and external tag attachment.”
